Members use BBC Tools with mechanic assistance:
Barry Shook came in with a clicking noise on his commuter bike. He uses his bike every day to get to work and everywhere else. LCI Steve Schmitt diagnosed the problem as a bad pedal, replacing the right pedal with a used pedal from our used parts supply. Barry reported the clicking was gone after a test ride. Steve suggested Barry start looking for a new set of pedals because he can expect his other pedal to fail soon, too. Barry’s full service bike shop is Cutters in South Bethlehem, so he will take it up with John/Lisa Ronca, the owners. CAT encourages all commuting cyclists to support their full-service bike shop.
Steve Schmitt did some routine maintenance on his bike, pumping up his tires, cleaning/lubricating his chain and checking his rims/brake pads.
Steve instructed Barry Shook what to expect from a pedal used every day for bike commuting. He showed Barry how to notice wear on a pedal and how to tell when to replace a pedal.

This week’s donations:
The BBC accepts donations of bicycles, bike parts, tools and supplies on Thursdays from 5-9PM and Saturdays from 8AM to 4PM at 1935 W Broad St. in Bethlehem. We provide a receipt for all contributions and we are a 501(c)3 educational charity under the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Barbara Rowley donated a carry all pack for mounting on a rear wheel rack.
We are hoping someone will donate a dormer fan, preferably with two fans that operate independently and blow in different directions.
Barbara Rowley visited the shop today traveling to the BBC on LANtaBus Route 107 to and from deep West Allentown. She and Steve talked about pedestrian and transit issues. Steve found 7 empty 40 ouncers under the bus stop bench when he walked Barbara to the bus stop. He put the bottles on recycling and made a note to step up the Adopt-a-Bus Stop program at Pennsylvania and Broad Streets.
Steve worked on a report concerning the Patrick Ytsma ghost bike and permanent memorial, plus the minutes of today’s Ride Share Task Force. He also did some accounting.

Volunteer coordinator is responsible for the report each time the BBC is open. S/he has everyone sign-in, tracks members, registers activities, records class participation, maintains paperwork and takes pictures. If you think you might enjoy this job email Christin@car-free.org today.
CAR-FREE.ORG vice-President, Roy Young, is working on installing two sinks, one in the bathroom for washing up and a second large ceramic basin for washing bikes and taking showers. Both sinks were donated by Lynda Moore.
