Bethlehem Bicycle Cooperative eNews – Sat. April 6, 2013

The Bethlehem Bicycle Cooperative (BBC) is open for Members and Guests

Thursdays from 5-9pm and Saturdays from 8AM to 4PM.

Today we offer a FREE helmet for any child under 10 who comes in with a parent/guardian and bicycle.

The Beier family got all three of their children’s bikes safety checked for just $10. The parents learned how to do a quick safety check of the bikes and the kids got some basic instruction, too. All three children got FREE helmets. They live in the neighborhood, so they will be coming back again soon with the parent’s bikes also.

The Bradford family was the first to take advantage of our FREE helmet offer.

Guest passes are just $5 for an individual and $10 for a family today!

Today’s Bicycle Quotation:

“I don’t understand why we have to promote bicycle riding.  Cycling is almost as good as sex and we certainly don’t have to promote sex.”

* If you have a favorite quotation or an interesting story about cycling please share as a comment below and maybe next week we will feature it in our post :)

Members use BBC Tools with mechanic assistance:

Once again tires pumped, chain lubed, brake pads checked on Steve’s bike.  Scott replaced Steve’s chain which was worn to the point that it would have started to wear out his drive train moving parts.

Scott replaced his chain and did a tune-up on the rest of his bike.

The BBC offers education classes, Bicycle Heaven Rides and the Bicycle Library program.

Bike Education:

Basic Bicycle Education

Levi, Lizzy, A.J., Jarred and Katrina Beier

Traffic Skills 101

What Luis Rodriguez learned today: Always check your tires, brakes and for bearing wobble before starting a ride. Never approach another vehicle from the right. Slow down before coming to a blind corner.  Look both ways when you come to an intersection where the street is wider than the one you are on. Look behind you before moving laterally on the roadway. When traffic is coming and you have to stop put your foot down on the street.  When going downhill stay on the brake to control your speed.  Don’t cut anyone off.  Don’t intimidate pedestrians.  Luis rode with Steve Schmitt to the Apollo Grill, the Wells Fargo bank, Janneke Bos house and Action Wheels.

Basic Bicycle Mechanics

Ian Douglas learned how to rebuild a wheel hub from Lee Poole-Smith.

The BBC accepts donations of bicycles, bike parts, tools and supplies on Thursdays from 5-9PM and Saturdays from 8AM to 4PM at 1935 W Broad St. in Bethlehem.  We provide a receipt for all contributions and we are a 501(c)3 educational charity under the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Right now we are also hoping someone will donate a microwave oven they don’t need anymore. Also a work sink.

The Strasser family visited for a helmet for their daughter. But she is only 2 years old, so we ordered some toddler helmets.  The Strassers will come back when we call and tell them we have a helmet for them.

The Beier Family bought a family guest pass for just $10 and got helmets, bike checks and basic instruction for their three children.
