CAT Continues to Keep Broad & Guetter Pleasant for 4,000 Bus Riders a Day

Bethlehem Mayor John B. Callahan writes about the

Broad & Guetter Adopt-a-Bus Stop Program

In 2013, Bethlehem celebrates 15 years working with CAT-Coalition for Appropriate Transportation.  CAT is an educational charity striving to improve walking, bicycling, public transportation and local trails in the Lehigh Valley.

In cooperation with LANta and the Bethlehem Parking Authority, CAT has worked hard to keep the bus terminal at Broad & Guetter clean and pleasant. More than 4,000 people pass through this focal point for LANta bus service every day, which makes the job of keeping it a positive experience challenging. Those of us who lived here in Bethlehem before CAT took on this function remember a bus terminal that was filthy, frequently vandalized and a location for drug dealing & other street crime. Because CAT members ride the bus, they have a vested interest in their experience while waiting at this important location.  Through CAT’s Adopt-a-Bus Stop Program, Guetter Street between Broad and North Streets is cleaned daily by bus riders who earn bus passes for their work.

The program is made possible without tax dollars from the City of Bethlehem.  In fact, because the CAT workers empty the main garbage containers at the terminal when they overflow between City pick-up, the program saves the City money. LANta donates bus passes and supplies, such as garbage bags, snow shovels and gloves.  The Bethlehem Parking Authority donates some space in the North Street Garage to store supplies and tools.  The rest of the budget comes from organizations and individuals who make voluntary contributions each year.  This is a cost effective way to handle this issue.

This letter is my seal of approval on this effort.  I only ask that you listen to a representative of CAT when they call upon you.  Whether or not you want to offer any help to this program is up to you.  But if you decide to help you will be in good company.  Most of the businesses in town have helped CAT, with the Broad & Guetter Adopt-a-Bus Stop program, to put bike helmets on children, the Monocacy Way 5K Run plus other projects to improve walking, cycling, trail use and transit in downtown Bethlehem.

A tax deductible contribution to CAT is a cost effective way to improve our quality of life.  It would be great if we could expand the Adopt-a-Bus Stop Program to other intersections in downtown Bethlehem through more voluntary contributions.

 Sincerely,

Mayor John B.Callahan
