Bethlehem Bicycle Cooperative eNews – Thursday, July 12, 2012

Janneke & Gwen clear the stairway to Burnside Plantation for the Blueberry Festival.

Most Thursdays we enjoy Love Your Local Trail activities on the Monocacy Way. At the request of the Historic Bethlehem Partnership we are trimming back the shrubs growing over the stairs between Burnside Plantation and the parking lot behind Martin Tower. This is in preparation for the fabulous Blueberry Festival. To have more fun on your local trail write director@car-free.org.

The Bethlehem Bicycle Cooperative (BBC) is open for Members and Guests every Thursday from 5-9pm and Saturday from 8AM to 4PM. We are located at 14 West Raspberry in beautiful, downtown Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

League of American Bicyclists certified Cycling Instructors are counting bicycles this week in Easton, Allentown and Bethlehem.  Thank you J. Reisenberger, Gary Warren, Lee Poole-Smith, Steve Schmitt, Betty Kelly, T. Stephen Nicholson and Kelly Kennedy for counting bikes and surveying bicycle behavior in our three cities.

CAT members using BBC Tools with mechanic assistance:

Barry Shook pumped up his tires, cleaned and lubricated his drive train.  Frank and Lee helped Barry analyze his bike, which he rides everywhere, to see what parts he needs to replace soon.  Barry will buy the parts at Cutters and bring them back here for help with installation.

Lee Poole-Smith worked on his rear disk brake with Master Mechanic Frank Pavlick.

They also discussed the wheels Lee is building from scratch.

Steve Schmitt pumped up his tires and cleaned his drive train.  Have you done anything nice for your bike this week? Bring it to the Bethlehem Bicycle Cooperative today.

As we are moving soon, we are throwing out a lot of stuff.  When it’s wheels, most of them have to be separated steel from aluminum by cutting the spokes off.

You start with scrap wheels
You cut out all the spokes
Separate the steel hub parts from the aluminum
You end up with a pile of steel scrap
. . . and a pile of aluminum scrap
Lee Poole-Smith does most of the work. Ian Douglas and Steve help.

  • at 6:30PM it was sunny and 91 degrees F.
