Bethlehem Bicycle Cooperative eNews – Thursday, June 28, 2012

Janneke & Gwen clear the stairway to Burnside Plantation for the Blueberry Festival.

Most Thursdays we enjoy Love Your Local Trail activities on the Monocacy Way.  This week, at the request of the Historic Bethlehem Partnership we trimmed back the shrubs growing over the stairs between Burnside Plantation and the parking lot behind Martin Tower.  This is in preparation for the fabulous Blueberry Festival.  To have more fun on your local trail write director@car-free.org.

The Bethlehem Bicycle Cooperative (BBC) is open for Members and Guests every Thursday from 5-9pm and Saturday from 8AM to 4PM. We are located at 14 West Raspberry in beautiful, downtown Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

League of American Bicyclists certified Cycling Instructors are counting bicycle this week in Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton.  Today, in Bethlehem, more than 200 bikes are counted at the intersection of the Greenway and South New Street.

CAT members using BBC Tools with mechanic assistance:

Scott Harvey tweaks his shifters with Lee Poole-Smith’s assistance.

Steve Schmitt pumps up his tires, cleans his drive train and checks his chain for wear.  He swapped out his pedals to see if that would correct a metal fatigue caused sound when he puts severe torque on his pedals.  This did not correct the problem.  Lee took a ride on the bike and believes it is the chainwheel.  As it it came from a used bike and is just $14 to buy a new one, that’s just what Steve did.

Lee mails his lock back to the manufacturer after his key jams in the lock.  He also swapped out a shifter cable and diagnosed a problem with the cassette.  As the cassette can not be replaced without replacing the hub as the hubs are not branded on Lee’s bike, we ordered a new hub for him.
