Our landlord at 14 West Raspberry Street, Fred Achey, has allowed CAT to use 1,600 square feet of retail space at a rent of only$125/month for almost 3 years. Thanks in part to this generous gift, the Bethlehem Bicycle Cooperative (BBC) has helped more than 2,000 cyclists since September, 2009. Achey wants us to pay $800 a month starting in August, which we can not afford, so we must move.
CAT will hold a special Save the BBC North Block Party on Saturday June 9th to raise money and awareness. We need an estimated $5,000 to finish out the year here at our present location. Plus we need a ground level space of about 1,500 square feet with plumbing and electricity reasonably near to downtown North Bethlehem if there is to be a BBC North in 2013. We have 2 months to accomplish this or the “BBC North” facility will close, at least temporarily.
We hope to have the BBC West up and running in about 3 months, so there should be continuity of service for those willing to travel to 1935 West Broad Street in Bethlehem for bicycle education classes, use of the educational bike shop and other support services for those using a bicycle for transportation.
CAR-FREE.ORG Administrative Offices
We have successfully moved the CAR-FREE.ORG administrative functions to the Forté Building thanks to excellent lease terms from owner Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley. In addition to tripling the space we had for office duties at 14 West Raspberry Street , we now have access to a computer laboratory, a classroom, a community room and a board room. CAT held it’s first leadership meeting at the new digs (1337 East Fifth Street in South Bethlehem) when members of our Board met CACLV Executive Director, Alan Jennings. CAT Leadership meetings are scheduled for every 3rd Monday at 6:30PM.
People & Stuff We Need
We need volunteers:
To scan historical CAR-FREE documents so we don’t move file cabinets full of old paper.
To finish sheetrocking the ceiling of the first floor at 14 W. Raspberry before we move. We have the screws, sheetrock and tape. We need people to put it up.
To make phone calls or knock on doors to ask CAT members and the public for donations.
Volunteers can just drop in during regular BBC North hours, Thursdays 5-9PM and Saturdays 8AM to 4PM. Or if you want to work some other time please call or email the CAR-FREE.ORG office: 610 954 5744 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Things we need:
hard wired land line telephones
truck with or without driver
Stuff We Have to Find a Home For
Bike frames and accessories
Emergency Moving Fund
Unfortunately we will face additional costs over the next several months to move. Our total rent will probably increase as will our utility costs. So please consider renewing your CAR-FREE CAT membership and/or your BBC Membership today If, in addition, you could make a donation to the Emergency Moving Fund it would help a lot. Use any credit card through our home page or mail a check to CAT at 1337 East Fifth Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015.
