The 2012 EACC West Ward Bicycle Safety Day was held on April 5th from 1-3pm. A total of 45 children participated, including 25 children from the Easton Area Community Center (EACC) and 20 children from Easton’s West Ward community. Many parents and grandparents attended as well. __ helmets were fit and provided to the children at no charge. The children were encouraged to decorate their new helmets with adhesive vinyl art donated by Mark and Liz of Signology. Genesis Bicycles donated a shop mechanic to perform safety checks and adjustments to every child’s bicycle. Three League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) provided cycling instruction on the skills course with the help of the Easton Police Department.
A watermelon helmet drop was performed to demonstrate the benefits of helmet use. EACC provided drinks and ice pops for participating kids. LCIs and police officers also demonstrated how to minimize stopping distance using handbrakes, and the problem with using one’s feet dragging on the ground to stop the bike. 15 older children (ages 10 and up) went on a neighborhood bike ride with LCIs and police escort.
Weather today: 50s, sunny, 10-15mph winds.
