This seminar was sponsored by Genesis Bicycles.  Thanks to the intelligence of Genesis Owner, Tomias Hinchcliff, and Genesis Assistant Manager, Mary Merritt’s love for cycling , Genesis Bicycles of Easton, Pennsylvania, is the first bike shop in the country to certify all of its ride leaders as League of American Bicyclists Cycling Instructors.  Read more about this story here.

Comments from the evaluation forms of the candidates:

Howard Gallup:

"During the Pre-Seminar activities everything was clear and well handled.  Recommendations for improvement - switch reading from "Effective Cycling" to "League Guide to Safe & Enjoyable Cycling."  Forrester has too much material, and in my opinion, too much criticizing others.  Steve Schmitt was very effective.  Road test - some challenging spots, much needed to do under instruction.  Instructor handbook was good.  Seminar components good.  I would like more help on leading Genesis Rides - keeping groups of 20+ under control, with large differences in skills and abilities."

Tom Hester:

“The entire Pre-Seminar process was very simple and easy to follow.  Site Coordinator was very good at keeping us informed.  Seminar Instructor was great.  He excelled at tailoring the information to our group.  The facilities were great and the road course covered almost everything covered in the classroom.  The overall experience was excellent, giving me much more confidence on the road, and as a leader.

Scott Slingerland:

“The material was well organized.  Steve has such great knowledge of the material that his delivery is casual, and personal, but is plenty strong enough to have impact.  Steve’s off-topic diversions keep the discussion lively.  Recommendations:  Students should mark answers on pre-test question sheet so that they can read their notes when reviewing the pre-test in class.”

Jeff Morehouse:

“Steve kept the instruction light, fun and educational.  I am walking/riding away a much safer and confident rider.  He set a great example as an instructor and conveyed these techniques in a way that I will be able to use them effectively as an instructor.”

Frank Losagio:

“Steve did an excellent job on communicating the LCI principles.  He also provided stories about applicable riding experience.  He used positive reinforcement well.  Steve held everyone’s attention and interacted very well with the group.”

Peter Milthorp:

“The written questions on the pre-test could be clearer.   Everything else was great.”

Special note from the Seminar Trainer, Steve Schmitt.  “During each seminar we always discuss the funding of bicycle education and methods to raise money to pay the costs of such programming.  This is the first seminar I have ever taught during which a candidate took this information and went out and immediately raised money.  LCI Frank Losagio raised $1,000 from Georgia Pacific to pay about half of the costs of a Bike Derby at Cheston Elementary School held three weeks after his LCI seminar.  Frank won an award from Georgia Pacific as an environmental activist, too.  He worked at the May 6 Derby, with his son Michael Losagio, fitting helmets.”
